Thomas Ogunrinde

Thomas Ogunrinde (born November 4, 1960 ) is a table tennis player from Nigeria. In the 1980s he was African champion, in the 1990s he played in the German Bundesliga .

Career

Thomas Ogunrinde took part in the table tennis world championships in 1983 and 1985 , but did not come close to a medal. He had his greatest successes in 1985 at the African Championships . Here he reached the semi-finals in singles, in doubles with Abiono and with the Nigerian team he won gold.

In 1988 he played at the Bundesliga club TTC Altena (then TTC Plaza Altena), with whom he became champion of the 2nd Bundesliga North in 1991. In 1991 he moved to 1. FC Bayreuth , with whom he was promoted to the 1. Bundesliga in 1994. Ogunrinde was the first African player in the 1st Bundesliga. In 1996 he joined the DJK Offenburg .

Ogunrinde took on German citizenship and was therefore eligible to participate in national tournaments. In 2005 he and Nicolai Popal became German senior champions in doubles in the over 40 age group.

After his career in the Bundesliga, he played for several lower-class clubs, for example in 2001 at SV Blau-Weiß Wiehre Freiburg in the Badenliga, 2004 to 2006 at TTC Wehr and since 2007 at VfR Birkmannsweiler (2014/15 Regionalliga).
