Thomas Otto (born July 11, 1958 in Lünen , Westphalia ) is a German journalist and artist.

Career

After graduating from high school in Lünen-Altlünen, Thomas Otto began studying Byzantine Studies, Classical Archeology, Art History and Ancient History for an MA at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. After completing his undergraduate studies, he also continued to study history and geography for the higher teaching post up to the first state examination in 1985; He did his basic military service from 1986 to 1987 at the Topographiebatterie 800 in Münster, Westphalia. He then completed a legal clerkship for the higher teaching post in history and geography and completed this with the 2nd state examination. From 1990 he volunteered at Fachpresse Verlag in Hamburg, where he became editor-in-chief of the trade journal Fleischmagazin in 1992. In 1993 he moved to Heinrich Bauer Verlag, Hamburg, to the popular magazines Das Neue Blatt and Tina . In 2000 he joined Hubert Burda Media, Offenburg, as a senior editor. There he became deputy editor-in-chief of the magazine Frau im Trend in 2003 . From 2007 he took over the magazine Frau im Trend as editor-in-chief. Since 2017 he has been editor-in-chief for Connected Workflows at Hubert Burda Media (Connected Workflows = linked production channels, describes a new, cross-editorial way of working that can make better use of the diverse uses of digitally networked media).

He is the author of articles in the specialist journal Jazzpodium, Stuttgart (e.g. on the bassist Jaco Pastorius, Jazzpodium, 9/07, pp. 18-20).

After graduating from high school, Thomas Otto began studying at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster in 1979, where he studied generals a. a. learned the techniques of drypoint etching. In addition to his studies, he expanded his knowledge of photography technology, especially black and white photography. He set the focus of his course content in drawing and photographic work. In 2004 Thomas Otto joined the Freiraum artists' initiative in Achern, Baden-Württemberg. At the same time he became a member of the Achern cultural association. There he presented his pictures and photographs for the first time in an exhibition.

In 2008 his first CD Storytelling was released, a compilation of his own compositions and recordings from two decades with a biographical character.

Thomas Otto has been a member of the Worpswede artist colony in Worpswede near Bremen since 2011/2012 .

In 2010 he first went to New York to study. His main focus was black and white photography. In 2015 a second study visit to New York followed with seminars on new media at New York University with Jeff Jarvis. Between 2004 and today he carried out various workshops and open studios. From 2014 onwards he designed the first sketches for the Worpswede triptych “White roses against gray”. In January 2018 he completed the triptych (with predella) and presented it to the public for the first time (on February 17th at the vernissage of the exhibition “Images of People - Images of the Soul”).

In February and March 2018, the monthly exhibition People Pictures - Soul Pictures followed in the municipal gallery Altes Rathaus in Worpswede. On March 1, 2018, Thomas Otto's second CD, "Paulas Traum", was released on the concert grand. Subtitle of the CD: Worpsweder Gymnopedien. As a form of music borrowed from the Gymnopedien (from the Greek: boy dances) of the French composer Eric Satie, music for quiet hours.
