Thomas Richter-Forgách (* 1940 in Komárom ( Hungary )) is a German stage designer , set designer and theater architect.

Career

Richter-Forgách came to Germany in 1956, where he initially did a traineeship at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus before studying with Teo Otto at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf from 1959 to 1963 . In 1960 he became Otto's assistant and in 1961 head of equipment at the Düsseldorfer Kammerspiele. From 1963 to 1966 he was chief stage designer at the Ulm Theater and from 1964 to 1966 he was a lecturer in the stage class at the Düsseldorf Academy.

Act

In the early 1970s he went to the Kassel State Theater as chief designer . With the director Ulrich Melchinger , he brought a production of Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen onto the stage, which is considered to be a trend change for music theater. The production “was a daring attempt to free Wagner's opus from all romanticizing ballast and to get closer to the idea of a total work of art”. A complete costume set that Richter-Forgách designed for the Kassler “Wagner-Ring” is in the Collection of the Austrian Theater Museum in Vienna.

After another engagement at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, Richter-Forgách set up as a freelance set designer in the late 1970s. Since then he has been setting up productions on the stages in Basel, Moscow, Paris, Vienna, Bruges, Florence, Hamburg, Hanover, Leipzig, Göttingen and Stuttgart. He stages exhibitions (including for the German Literature Archive in Marbach ) and works for television.

His first marriage was to the painter and costume designer Wanda Richter-Forgách , with whom he worked on numerous productions.
