Thomas Rudolph (soccer player, 1960)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Rudolph (born August 8, 1960 ) is a former football player at 1. FC Magdeburg , for whom he played in 1980 in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the East German Football Association. He is a 22-time junior and six-time young national player of the GDR.

Soccer career

Rudolph joined the junior team of 1. FC Magdeburg in 1977 and played 22 international matches with the GDR junior national team until 1978. For the seasons 1978/79 and 1979/80 he was nominated by 1. FC Magdeburg as a defender for his squad in the junior league. In the second half of the 1979/80 league season, the 1.85 m tall Rudolph was already in the first men's team at the age of 19. On April 12, 1980, the 21st game day, he was used instead of Wolfgang Seguin as a left midfielder from the start and also played the entire 90 minutes. By the end of the season he was used in three other league league games.

Because of this good start in the first team, FCM officially nominated Rudolph as a midfielder for the league squad for the 1980/81 season. Although he played six international matches with the GDR youth national team this season , he had no chance at FCM against the top-class trio Seguin, Pommerenke and Steinbach and was not used in the league team for the entire season. Instead, he finished his training as a mechanical engineer. For the 1981/82 season he was again nominated for the junior league and then did not return to a first division team.
