Thomas Schultze

Thomas Eberhard Schultze (born January 7, 1963 ) is a German diplomat . He has been Head of the German Consulate General in Toronto since September 2018 and was previously Ambassador to Croatia from 2015 to 2018 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1984, Schultze began studying law at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz , during which he spent time abroad in Dijon , Thessaloniki and New York City , and graduated in 1990 with the first state examination. He then completed his legal clerkship in Koblenz , Speyer and Jakarta between 1990 and 1993 and passed his second state examination in 1993. During this time, from 1992 to 1993, he also completed a degree at the University of Administrative Sciences Speyer , which he completed in 1993 with a master's degree in administrative sciences (Mag. Rer. Publ.).

In 1993, Schultze began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service and after completing it, initially worked in the European Department of the Foreign Office between 1994 and 1995 and then from 1995 to 1998 as an economic consultant at the embassy in Saudi Arabia . He was then consul head of the legal department and press officer at the Consulate General in Istanbul between 1998 and 2001 and, after his return to Germany, he was a member of the management team of the Foreign Office from 2001 to 2004, before he was civilian head of the PRT ( Provincial Reconstruction Team ) between 2004 and 2005. and head of the Kunduz branch of the embassy in Afghanistan .

After Schultze returned to Germany in 2005, he was initially deputy head of the Political Department and then headed the Council of Europe unit in the Political Department of the Foreign Office between 2007 and 2009. This was followed by a position as head of the legal and consular department at the embassy in Turkey from 2009 to 2012 and as head of the OSCE and Council of Europe unit in the Political Department of the Foreign Office between 2012 and 2014, before becoming head from 2014 to 2015 of the Turkey and EFTA States Unit in the Political Department of the Federal Foreign Office.

In September 2015, Schultze succeeded Hans-Peter Annen as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Croatia . On September 4th, 2015, he was received by the President of the Republic of Croatia , Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović , to present his credentials.

Since September 2018, Schultze has been Head of the German Consulate General in Toronto with consular responsibility for all of Canada.
