Thomas Sexton (politician, 1848)

Thomas Sexton (* 1848 in Waterford , † November 1, 1932 ) was an Irish politician of the Irish Nationalist Party and later the Irish Parliamentary Party .

Sexton was born in Waterford in 1848 and attended local schools. At the age of 13 he started to work for the Waterford & Limerick Railway Company , a railway company. Six years later he worked for The Nation , a weekly newspaper. In 1880 Sexton was elected to the House of Commons and was a member until 1896. In 1887 he was High Sheriff of Dublin . After that he held in the years 1888 and 1889 for two consecutive terms, the Office of the Lord Mayor of Dublin ( Lord Mayor of Dublin ). From 1892 to 1912 he was chairman of the Freeman's Journal .

The street where he was born was renamed Sexton Street in his honor .
