Thomas Shanahan

Thomas F. Shanahan Jr. ( February 14, 1936 - January 12, 2006 in Oak Lawn , Illinois ) was an American engineer .

Shanahan studied aeronautics at the University of Illinois and then received his Masters from the University of Southern California . He worked for 27 years at Rockwell International in Downey , California and was involved in NASA's projects on the Mercury , Gemini , Apollo and Apollo-Soyuz missions. Among other things, he built a toilet seat for women that they could use in space .

His name is on a plaque that is on the moon .

Shanahan died of lung cancer , leaving behind his wife, children and eight grandchildren.
