Thomas Smith (politician, 1745)
Thomas Smith (* 1745 , † March 31, 1809 in Philadelphia ) was an American lawyer and politician of the state of Pennsylvania .
Life
Born in Scotland , Smith attended the University of Edinburgh . In 1769 he emigrated to the United States and settled in Bedford , Pennsylvania . In 1772 Smith was admitted to the bar, and in 1774 he was elected justice of the peace .
After participating in the American Revolutionary War , Smith became a member of the Constituent Assembly of Pennsylvania in 1776. From 1776 to 1780 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Following his political activities, Smith was elected a judge and was last judge of the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court from 1794 until his death.
