Thomas Strickland (Knight)

Sir Thomas Strickland of Sizergh (* around 1440; † 1494/97) was an English knight .

Life

Sir Thomas Strickland was a son of Walter Strickland and Douce Croft.

The Stricklands were associated with wealthy Westmorland landowners and the Neville family, the Earls of Westmorland .

Thomas Strickland , like his father, was loyal to the York House during the Wars of the Roses . He fought for York at the Battle of Towton (1461), Barnet and Tewkesbury (1471) and was knighted as a Knight Bachelor on May 4, 1471 after the victory at Tewkesbury .

Even under Richard III. he remained loyal to the House of York and fought on August 22, 1483 at Bosworth against Henry Tudor, the victor and new King Henry VII.

Sir Thomas Strickland died in 1494 or 1497.

Marriages and offspring

Sir Thomas was married twice, first to Agnes Parr (1443-1490), daughter of Thomas Parr and second marriage to Margaret, widow of Sir John Byron of Colwick, daughter of Robert Fouleshurst of Crewe.

He left the following children:

  • Joan Strickland (1465–1528) ⚭ Thomas Middleton of Bethom
  • Thomas Strickland (1469–1516), Rector of Gosford Church
  • Gervase Strickland (1472–1506)
  • Anne Strickland (around 1478–1546) ⚭ Sir Richard Assheton of Middleton
  • Elizabeth Strickland (* before 1504), nun at Syon Abbey, Isleworth
