Thomas Terstegen

Thomas Terstegen (born August 7, 1960 in Wesel ) is a German diplomat who has been the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Democratic Republic of the Congo since August 2016 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1980, Terstegen began studying law at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität zu Münster and the University of Lausanne , which he completed in 1986 with the first state examination at the Hamm Judicial Examination Office . He then did his legal preparatory service at the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court , where he passed the second state examination in 1989. In 1989 he began his preparatory service for the higher foreign service and, after completing his attaché training in 1990, was initially employed at the Consulate General in Milan and then briefly in 1992 at the embassy in the Czech Republic . He then acted as permanent representative ad interim of the ambassador to Azerbaijan between 1992 and 1994 and as deputy head of Section 500 (international law) of the Federal Foreign Office from 1994 to 1997 .

In 1997 Terstegen became Consul General in Washington, DC and held this post until 2001. On his return, he was head of a section in the Legal Department at the Foreign Office in Berlin between 2001 and 2005 and Deputy Consul General in São Paulo from 2005 to 2008 and between 2008 and 2011 Head of the Northern Europe Division at the Federal Foreign Office. He was then Permanent Representative of the Ambassador to Algeria from 2011 to 2013, and then Permanent Representative of the Ambassador to Ethiopia between 2013 and 2016 .

In August 2016, Terstegen replaced Wolfgang Manig as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Democratic Republic of the Congo .
