Thomas Thynne, 2nd Viscount Weymouth

Thomas Thynne, 2nd Viscount Weymouth (born May 21, 1710 , † January 13, 1751 in Longleat ) was a British nobleman and politician.

Thomas Thynne came from the Thynne family . He was the only son of Thomas Thynne, the eldest son of courtier Henry Frederick Thynne, and of Mary Villiers, the eldest daughter of Edward Villiers, 1st Viscount Villiers and Barbara Chiffinch. His father died of smallpox before he was born on April 24, 1710 . His mother was second married to George Granville, 1st Baron Lansdown of Biddeford , in December 1711 . After the death of Thomas Thynne, 1st Viscount Weymouth , the eldest brother of his grandfather Henry Frederick Thynne, in July 1714, four-year-old Thomas became heir to his titles and the Thynne family's extensive estates in west and south-west England, including Longleat . When he came of age in 1731, Thynne became a member of the House of Lords and held the titles of 2nd Viscount Weymouth , 2nd Baron Thynne and 3rd Baronet , of Kempsford.

Marriages and offspring

In his first marriage he married on December 6, 1726 in Whitehall Elisabeth Sackville, the second daughter of Lionel Sackville, 1st Duke of Dorset and Elizabeth Colyear. His wife died on June 19, 1729, the marriage had remained childless. In his second marriage on July 3, 1733, he married Louisa Carteret, the second daughter of John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville and Frances Worsley, she was a great-granddaughter of Thomas Thynne, 1st Viscount Weymouth and thus his second cousin. She died on December 25, 1736, he had two sons with her:

His eldest son Thomas inherited his extensive estates and titles, he was promoted to Marquess of Bath in 1789 . His second son, Henry Frederick Thynne, became the heir of his grandfather John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville, in 1776; he was made Baron Carteret in 1784 .
