Thomas Wallensis

Thomas Wallensis (also Thomas de Carew ) († July 11, 1255 ) was a Welsh clergyman. From 1247 he was Bishop of St Davids .

Thomas Wallensis came from the Cambro-Norman Carew family . He was a younger son of William de Carew († 1213), Lord of Carew in Pembrokeshire , who also owned extensive estates in Ireland. While his older brother Nicholas Carew († before 1228) inherited her father's possessions, Thomas became a clergyman. Before 1235 he was a canon in Lincoln and before May 27, 1238 he was archdeacon of Lincoln. In 1247 he was elected by the Cathedral Chapter of St Davids as the new Bishop of the Welsh Diocese of St Davids . Bishop Robert Grosseteste of Lincoln urged him to accept the election, and on July 16, 1247 he was confirmed as bishop by the king. On July 26, 1248 he was ordained bishop by Robert Grosseteste in Canterbury . On September 26, 1247 were his temporalities of the diocese passed. Wallensis stayed in Rome between May 1252 and Lent 1253. Back in Wales, he chaired a diocesan synod that passed comprehensive church reforms on October 10, 1253.
