General
About half of Phangan's residents, including a small Chinese community, live in Thong Sala. The place in the southwest of the island is its economic and administrative center and with three piers the most important port. Here is the only landing stage for ferries from the mainland ( Chumphon , Surat Thani ) and from the northern neighboring islands of Tao , as well as landing stages for ferries from the larger southern neighboring island of Samui .
The place is of economic importance as the main transshipment point for goods of all kinds and as an arrival and departure point for numerous tourists who travel from here with songthaews ( shared taxis) or small ferry boats to the various places and beaches on the island.
In Thong Sala there are a number of travel agencies, banks, a Muay Thai arena, numerous restaurants and bars as well as a few hotels.
