Chumphon ( Thai ชุมพร ) is a city ( เทศบาล เมือง ชุมพร ) in the Chumphon province of Thailand . It is the capital of Mueang Chumphon County ( Amphoe ) and Chumphon Province.

location

Chumphon Province is located in the southern region of Thailand .

Chumphon is about seven kilometers to the east coast on the Gulf of Thailand in the upper part of the southern region of Thailand on the Tha Tapao River. Here is also the narrowest part of the Malay Peninsula , the Isthmus of Kra . The distance to the western Sungbei Bati in Burma is only about 40 kilometers. The distance to the capital Bangkok in the northeast is more than 460 kilometers.

In Chumphon the Buddhist heartland of Thailand merges into the Muslim south.

The area around Chumphon is affected by the northeast monsoons . The heaviest precipitation falls in the months of June to September, from December to January it can be very windy.

Economy and Importance

The lush savannah landscape around Chumphon allows for plantations: fruit ( mangosteen , longkong , rambutan and durian ), coffee , coconut ( coconut oil ) are the main products. From a tourist point of view, Chumphon is interesting as a transit station to the holiday island Ko Tao . The nearby beach "Thung Wua Laen" is one of the most beautiful on the Gulf of Thailand.

Chumphon has a train station on the Southern Railway , which connects Bangkok with Malaysia . There are still connections to Bangkok by long-distance bus, minibus and Nok Air . The nearest airport is Pathiu.

history

In 1989 the area around Chumphon was hit by Typhoon Gay, which practically destroyed all plantations. The fertility of the land made it possible to overcome this setback quickly.

Worth mentioning

In the science fiction novel The Chronoliths , Chumphon is the landing site of the first Chronolith.
