Thongloun Sisoulith (born November 10, 1945 in the province of Houaphan , Laos ) is a Laotian politician .

Live and act

Sisoulith initially studied from 1962 to 1969 at the College for Education of the Lao Patriotic Front (Neo Lao Hak Sat) in the province of Houaphan . While still a student, he worked in the teaching department of the Patriotic Front from 1967 to 1969.

After completing his studies, he worked for the Mission of the Patriotic Front in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in Hanoi during the Vietnam War until 1973 . He then studied at the Leningrad Pedagogical Institute from 1973 to 1978 , where he obtained a master's degree in linguistics and literature . After returning to Laos, he was an instructor at the University of Vientiane , a forerunner of today's Laos National University, for one year . This was followed from 1979 to 1981 as a secretary and head of the department for foreign relations in the Ministry of Education.

In the following years he studied at the Academy of Social Sciences in Moscow and received his doctorate there in 1984 as a Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. ) in history . After returning to Laos, he was director of the public research department in the Office of the Council of Ministers from 1985 to 1986, and then from 1987 to 1992 Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs.

In 1993 he was appointed Minister of Labor and Social Welfare in the cabinet of Khamtay Siphandone and was a member of the Council of Ministers until 1997. In 1998 he was elected a member of the National Assembly, where he represented the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LRVP) until 2003 .

Under Siphandone's successor as Chairman of the Boungnang Vorachith Council of Ministers , he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister on March 27, 2001. At the same time he became chairman of the Committee for Planning and Cooperation, the Committee for Investment and Cooperation and the National Committee for Energy . Also in 2001 he became a member of the Politburo of the LRVP and thus the closest leadership circle of the party.

After Bouasone Bouphavanh took office as Prime Minister, he became Minister for Foreign Affairs on June 8, 2006 as part of the reorganization of the government. At the same time he was confirmed as Deputy Prime Minister and a member of the Politburo of the LRVP.

On April 20, 2016, he was elected Prime Minister of Laos by the National Assembly.
