The Thousand Islands ( dt. "Thousand Islands") are at the outflow of Lake Ontario in the border region between Canada and the United States at the beginning of the St. Lawrence River . The archipelago consists of 1864 islands , with Wolfe Island being by far the largest and island number 15 the smallest. 21 of these islands make up the Thousand Islands National Park , the smallest national park in Canada. Since 2002, the area is a UNESCO - Biosphere Reserve .
The American salad dressing " Thousand Island Dressing " owes its name to the region in which it was probably invented and has carried the name of the Thousand Islands, which are otherwise little known outside of North America, into the world.
Remnants of the Adena culture were found on the Thousand Islands site .
The numerous forts and other military installations in the region are witnesses of the various conflicts during the European settlement of the North American continent. B. the Seven Years War . As a result, more than 400 shipwrecks lie in close proximity to Kingston in the depths of Lake Ontario.
