history

The first European visitors came to the area of Alexandria Bay around 1804 via the St. Lawrence River: The bay offered a natural harbor, which was also used by the first colonists. In 1816 the era of steamships on the river began, so that the bay was prepared for the construction of a village from 1818 and a landing stage was built. The regular steamboat trips connected Sackets Harbor on Lake Ontario, Cape Vincent , Clayton and Alexandria Bay.

Settlement began in 1818 with a log house; the first house made of beams and boards was built in 1820, and the first school in 1821. In 1828 a customs house followed that managed the transition to the Canadian side of the river. The Sunken Rock Lighthouse followed in 1847 : a lighthouse that secured the passage through the Thousand Islands. At that time, Alexandria Bay was an important port of call for steamers because they were loaded with firewood here. In 1848 both the first hotel and the first church were built, which was used for public services from 1851, and in 1860 the village consisted of 24 houses.

Although a shipyard built small sailing boats and occasionally steamships, Alexandria Bay was never an important industrial location. Instead, it was known as a summer resort and fishing area from around 1845 due to its location on the Thousand Islands. Tourism in the area achieved a great boom when the then President of the United States, Ulysses Grant, and his family and friends accepted the invitation of his friend George W. Pullman to stay in a holiday home on one of the islands off the town. As a result, two more large hotels were built by 1873, which further promoted tourism.

Boldt Castle, 2008

One of the tourists who discovered the Thousand Islands during this period was George Boldt , General Manager of the New York Grand Hotel Waldorf Astoria . He first built a summer residence on Hearts Island, one of the islands off Alexandria Bay, which he designed from 1900 into a castle based on the Rhenish buildings. After the sudden death of his wife in 1904, he left the building unfinished; It was not until 1974 that the Thousand Island Bridge Authority bought the ruins and turned it into a luxury hotel. This structure, called Boldt Castle , is now one of the main attractions of the Alexandria Bay community.

Religions

Several religious communities are active in the village: the First Methodist Episcopal Church , Saint Cyril's Roman Catholic Church , the Reformed Church of the Thousand Isles, the Saint Lawrence Episcopal Church and the Alexandria Bay Baptist Church .
