history
Little is known about the prehistoric settlements in the area; there are no written records about the first inhabitants of the country before the European colonists. But there is an archaeological site that could be identified as an Iroquois village ; It is also known that the Onondaga used the area as their hunting ground.
The first European explorers to feel their way across the Saint Lawrence River into Lake Ontario were Samuel de Champlain and his expedition, which camped near Kingston in what is now Canada in 1615. From 1655 the presence of two British missionaries who tried to evangelize the Onondaga is documented. At the same time, attempts were made to counteract the influence of the Canadian French on the native Indian tribes through Fort Niagara and some trading posts further west by building a British fort near Oswego and building a network of trading posts .
The countries in northern New York had been extensively sold at that time, some to trading companies. Around 1800 Cape Vincent belonged to the property of a private citizen, James LeRay Chaumont, after whom a large number of places in the area are named after them. The village of Cape Vincent was founded around 1810 on a convenient landing site as a local trading center on the Saint Lawrence River. During the British-American War of 1812/13, American forces were stationed here because of the exposed location on the border and the proximity of the British base in Kingstown, but they were not deployed. One of the houses that housed the soldiers still stands on North James Street.
From 1816 the regular service with steamships between Sackets Harbor on Lake Ontario and various places on the St. Lawrence River was taken; This gave Cape Vincent a significant boost in development. In 1848 preparations began for the construction of a railway line from Rome to Cape Vincent; In 1853 a canal through Wolfe Island was completed, which shortened the travel times of the riverboats to Kingston. When a considerably larger administrative area, Lyme , was divided, Cape Vincent was created as an independent town on April 10, 1849. The parish was named after the son of the original landowner, Vincent Le Ray. In June 1853 the main settlement of the town became a self-governing community (Village), also named Cape Vincent. At that time there were 1218 inhabitants in the town of Cape Vincent.
From around 1880, the Thousand Islands , which lie in the stream off Cape Vincent, were discovered by the then fashionable summer visitors from the cities. As a result, Cape Vincent slowly changed from a commercial center to a tourist destination. Between 1900 and 1906, the harbor wall was built in the current, which protects today's harbor against currents and waves.
