Thums Up

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thums Up is a non-alcoholic , carbonated drink that is very popular in India , where its striking logo "Thums Up" ( English: thumbs up ; translated: "thumbs up") is well known. Comparable in taste to other cola drinks, it has a peculiar note , slightly reminiscent of the betel nut . Thums Up , Limca and Campa Cola gained national significance after these brands in 1977 against Coca-Cola and other foreign companies in the market had been introduced. In the 1980s Thums Up was advertised with the slogan "Taste the thunder!" , And in the 1990s - when the bottle volume was increased from 200 ml to 250 ml - as "Maha Cola" (translated: "Big Cola"). This moniker became popular in smaller towns, where "Maha Cola" was often ordered instead of Thums Up .

In the course of progressive economic liberalization , which led to fundamental reforms in 1991 , many multinational corporations pushed their way into the Indian market. Pepsi (1988) and Coca-Cola (1993) branded drinks returned to the Indian market.

Thums Up was bought by The Coca-Cola Company in 1993 . Coca-Cola now has a share of around 60% of the Indian soft drink market, but if you take out the sales achieved with Thums Up , according to an Indian NGO, only a share of less than 30% would remain. The product has a slightly stronger taste than regular cola.
