Thunderbolt in Kennywood ( West Mifflin , Pennsylvania , USA ) is a wooden roller coaster that opened as Pippin in 1924 . The Pippin was originally designed by John A. Miller . Between 1967 and 1968 the Pippin was greatly expanded by Andy Vettel / Kennywood and reopened on March 27, 1968 as Thunderbolt .

The lift hill is not like most other roller coasters at the beginning of the ride, but is located along the route.
