Shuttle Loop is the name of a steel roller coaster model type shuttle roller coaster of the manufacturer Schwarzkopf GmbH .

The train is accelerated out of the station on a 54 m long launch ramp to 86 km / h, which is followed by a looping . After the loop, the train travels up a 42 m high, 70 ° steep tower. Then the train goes back down again, through the loop and through the station to a second 32 m high tower that is located behind the station. Finally it is slowed down again in the station.

The trains of the shuttle loop have seven cars with space for four people (two rows of two people). Lap bars are used as a restraint system.

The first system was opened in 1977 in the Kings Dominion in Richmond , USA under the name "King Kobra". A total of twelve stationary trains were delivered, nine of which were relocated. There are currently five roller coasters of this model still in operation worldwide.

History of the drive systems

Originally, the train was supposed to be accelerated using linear motors (LIM). Since in 1976 linear motors were still expensive custom-made products, Werner Stengel and Anton Schwarzkopf decided to use a flywheel to accelerate the train . However, there was no manufacturer who gave a guarantee of at least one year on the necessary clutch. Stengel and Schwarzkopf thus designed the drive using a drop weight. This weight has a mass of 42 tons and falls from a height of 23 m. Systems with a flywheel were finally delivered later. The flywheel has a mass of 7.6 tons and is brought to 1044 revolutions per minute by means of a small 186 kW motor. In the station, a small carriage docks onto the train from behind. The sled pushes the train along the acceleration ramp using the falling weight or the flywheel.

Eight flywheel drive trains and four with counterweight were built.

Transportable shuttle loop

There is another variant of the Shuttle Loop which, in contrast to the other Shuttle Loop deliveries, is transportable. There is only one delivery of this variant, which is now a bullet in Selva Mágica , Mexico . With this system, the train is not accelerated by a flywheel or a falling weight. The train is first pulled backwards out of the station up a tower by means of friction wheels. Then it goes forward again down this tower, whereby the train is further accelerated by the friction wheels. For more details, see the main article: Bullet (Selva Mágica) .
