Philipp Freiherr von Podewils (born March 14, 1809 in Amberg , † November 25, 1885 ibid) was a royal Bavarian lieutenant general and factory director.

Life

Philipp von Podewils came from the Podewils family . He was born as the son of the professional officer Franz Friedrich Jakob von Podewils (1779–1842) and his wife Sophie geb. von Reitzenstein (1786–1814). He began his military career in 1825 as a cadet in the artillery of the Bavarian Army . In 1830 Philipp von Podewils became a second lieutenant . Coming from service at the front as a major , he joined the Royal Rifle Factory in Amberg in 1839 . From now on he worked intensively with handguns in order to improve their technology. In 1859 he constructed the Podewils rifle named after him , the best muzzle-loader of its time (rifled barrel, expansion bullet), and converted it into a breech-loader in 1867. The infantry rifle M / 1858 with rifled barrel was introduced in 1859 in the Bavarian army and the German war of 1866 and the French German war of 1870/1871 used. Podewils was director of the rifle factory from 1853 and retired in 1876 as lieutenant general in the Bavarian army. For his care he was venerated by the workers of the rifle factory and honored with great sympathy at his funeral in 1885. His hometown granted him honorary citizenship on December 31, 1872 .

He was married in his first marriage since 1840 to Martha geb. Haas (1811-1869). This marriage came from son Karl Franz Konstantin. In his second marriage since 1871 he was married to Emilie geb. by Vincenti (1816-1893).
