The Yokohama Dreamland ( Japanese 横 浜 ド リ ー ム ラ ン ド , Yokohama Dorīmurando ) was an amusement park in Japan . He was in the district Totsuka-ku of the city Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture and was from 1964 to 2002 in operation.

history

After Japan Dream Tourism , headed by Kunizo Matsuo, had built the Nara Dreamland in 1961 , it then built another amusement park on the southern outskirts of Yokohama. It opened its doors on August 1, 1964 and was the largest amusement park in Japan with an area of 132 hectares . On March 28, 1965, the Hotel Empire was added; this 68-meter-high , 21-story hotel was the tallest building in Japan for three years. At the top of the building, the roof of which is modeled on a pagoda, was a revolving restaurant .

In terms of traffic connections, the Dreamland was very unfavorable. On weekends, for example, a bus on the completely congested streets from the nearest Ōfuna train station took up to an hour. For this reason, construction work on the Yokohama Dreamland Monorail began soon afterwards . The 5.3 km long monorail was opened on May 2, 1966 and only took eight minutes to travel. On September 27, 1967, operations had to be stopped due to serious construction defects, but the monorail was not officially shut down until 2002.

In 1993 Japan Dream Tourism became the property of the Daiei retail chain . She tried to revive the run-down amusement park, but to no avail. Due to financial problems, Daiei decided to close the Dreamland nine years later. The last day of operation was February 17, 2002; at that time the area was 14.5 hectares. The site of the former amusement park is now used by the private Yokohama Pharmaceutical University (Yokohama Yakka Daigaku) , which began teaching in April 2006; the converted Hotel Empire serves as the university library .
