Thyia (Delphi)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thyia ( Greek  Θυία ) is a cult site near Delphi in ancient Greece , named after Thyia , a nymph and first priestess of Dionysus in Delphi.

According to Herodotus, when the Persian army advanced, the frightened inhabitants of Delphi erected the Anemoi , the wind gods, on the advice of Apollon , an altar in the Temenos of Thyia and there offered sacrifices to the winds. These sacrifices continued even after the Persian threat had ended .
