features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 36 to 40 millimeters. The forewings are extensively covered with a metallic golden shimmering surface. Only a longitudinal band below the front edge and the hem area are colored brown. Kidney and ring flaws are small and outlined in white. The hind wings are gray-brown without drawing, somewhat darkened at the edge. The thorax is furry and has a few tufts of hair, the proboscis is well developed.

Caterpillar, pupa

Adult caterpillars are green in color. They have thin white side ridge lines and whitish side stripes, which are sometimes dark.

The pupa is colored black-brown and shows light wing sheaths.

distribution and habitat

Thysanoplusia orichalcea occurs in the Mediterranean area , some islands in the Atlantic Ocean and in tropical parts of Africa. It is also found in India , Indochina and other tropical areas of Asia. It continues to spread in Australia and New Zealand . It is not at home in Central and Northern Europe, but has occasionally been found as a stray visitor in England and Switzerland . The species lives in warm biotopes , but especially likes to colonize cultural landscapes.

Way of life

The moths of Thysanoplusia orichalcea form consecutive generations. They are diurnal and nocturnal, visit flowers during the day and artificial light sources at night . They rarely appear on bait . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various herbaceous plants, and increasingly also on cultivated plants. In Australia and New Zealand the species occurs as a pest . With the help of the synthetically produced plant scent phenylacetaldehyde in combination with other scents, the moths were attracted in large numbers and made harmless. What is remarkable about this method is the fact that predominantly females are attracted by these scents. The pheromone traps, which are also used in Europe for other harmful species , naturally only attract males.
