The Tienschan Observatory ( Tien-Schanskaja Astronomitscheskaja Obserwatorija , Russian Тянь-Шаньская астрономическая обсерватория , English Tian Shan Observatory (TSHAO, TSAO) formerly Alma-Ata Observatory and Almaty Observatory ) is an observatory in Tienschan -Gebirge in altitude of 2800 m, 30 km south of the city of Almaty in Kazakhstan .

It was assigned to the Sternberg Institute for Astronomy (GAISh) until the collapse of the Soviet Union .

Furnishing

The observatory has two Ritchey-Chrétien telescopes with a mirror diameter of 1 meter and a number of smaller telescopes. The largest instrument, however, is a radio telescope .
