Tianhe-1A

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tianhe-1A ( Chinese  天河 一号 , Milky Way -1A) is a Chinese supercomputer .

With a computing power of 2.56 petaflops (measured according to the Linpack benchmark ), the Tianhe-1A replaced the American Cray Jaguar (1.76 PFLOPS) as the world's most powerful supercomputer until then. In June 2011, this record was exceeded by the four times faster Japanese Fujitsu K computer (10.51 PFLOPS).

With a connected load of around 4 megawatts , it is significantly more energy-efficient than its predecessor at the top, the Jaguar of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (around 7 megawatts).

In June 2012 the Tianhe-1A was considered the fifth fastest computer system in the world, behind the SuperMUC in Munich (2.9 PFLOPS). The theoretical maximum power is 4.67 petaflops. The Tianhe-1A consists of 7,168 Nvidia Tesla M2050 GPGPUs with 448 processor cores each and 14,336 Intel Xeon X5670 CPUs with six processor cores each. It was developed by the National Defense Science and Technology University and is located in the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin . A specially adapted Linux distribution serves as the operating system .

The successor system Tianhe-2 was the world's most powerful supercomputer with around 13 times the computing power (33.86 PFLOPS) from June 2013 to June 2016.

The computer had to shut down on August 13, 2015 after the National Supercomputing Center building was damaged in an explosion in Tianjin . The computer itself was not damaged. By the end of 2017, the Tianhe-1A was being used by more than 1,600 customers, fulfilling an average of more than 1,400 orders per day. According to conservative estimates, this saved the said customers up to 100 million yuan in research and development costs, while the companies generated a profit of more than 300 million yuan from the use of the computer. In addition to its wide application in the creation of computer-generated imagery , electronic banking and big data , the computer is also used for since 2012 Cloud Computing in e-Government of Tianjin Municipality Binhai (its location) used, in addition also for oil exploration, biomedicine , renewable energy , Materials research and the development of high-end equipment.
