Tibarenes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tibarener ( Greek Τιβαρηνοί, Latin Tibareni) were a Scythian tribe (according to ancient scholias ) on the south coast of the Pontos Euxeinos above Cape Genetaia. They lived from cattle breeding and are considered to be the inventors of metalworking , alongside the Chalybers and other peoples. Apollonios reports (Arg. 2,1011-1014) that the Tibarenes practiced the ritual of the couvade . According to Pliny, they painted or tattooed their bodies.

Together with the adjacent Moschern , macro formers , Mossynoikern and MarErn they formed the 19th satrapy in the Persian Empire . According to the epitaph of Darius, this would be Satrap Armenia. They took part in the Persian Wars, armed with wooden helmets, shields and spears, under the leadership of Ariomardos .

Sometimes the Tiberans are identified with the Tubal or the kingdom Tabal mentioned in the Bible .
