Tibor Benkő (born October 16, 1955 in Nyíregyháza ) is a Hungarian general who was in command of the armed forces of his home country from 2010 to 2018 . He was appointed Minister of Defense in the Orbán IV cabinet in May 2018 .

Life

Tibor Benkő was born in Nyíregyháza, in the north-east of Hungary. The general is married and has two daughters. In addition to his mother tongue, he speaks English and Russian.

Military career

In 1975 Benkő joined the Hungarian army . After training as an artillery officer , he took on various tasks in the troops between 1979 and 2005 (including as regimental and brigade commander). In the period from 2005 to 2009, he held leadership positions in the land forces, as brigadier general and later major general . From June 2010 until his appointment as Minister of Defense, Benkő was the military commander of the Hungarian armed forces.
