Education

VOTE, 2010, MDF, Plexiglas, 6.30 m × 1.30 m × 0.60 m

Müller studied from 2002 to 2010 at the University for Graphics and Book Art in Leipzig, in the field of media art. With his sculpture VOTE from 2010, Müller poses the question of value. Vote is a machine and a sculpture and, as a self-referential system, refers to the programming of societies through omnipresent algorithms. In order to manage the content of complex systems such as the WWW, instruments are required that provide information about the value of the content. Votings are a possible democratic instrument for determining values, whereby the question of the quality of the results should be asked, but not. Some basic questions that VOTE raises:

  • With what previous education, intention ... is an assessment made?
  • Is the value that is displayed something other than a statement about e.g. B. existing mediocrity?
  • What role do democratic instruments play in a society of the spectacle?
  • What should a rating system look like that actually says something about the value of something?
  • Who or what generates values for whom?
  • What is the relationship between value and institution?

Etc.

To use VOTE, the visitor to the art space can select a value between one and five stars and transfer it to a database via the sculpture's interface. A computer calculates the average of all votes cast to date. With each individual voting, a light effect is triggered that shows the successful submission of a value. In the respective exhibition space, VOTE must be presented clearly separated from other works in order to reduce existing conditions in the room.
