Animals in front of the camera

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Animals in front of the camera was a series of animal films that was conceived in 1974 for Bayerischer Rundfunk and was continuously produced by this broadcaster until 2016. A total of 54 episodes of the series were broadcast.

The multiple award-winning series by the animal filmmakers Ernst Arendt and Hans Schweiger has been on the ARD evening program since April 17, 1977 . After initially traveling in a VW bus and then in a Mercedes-Benz T 2 , a furniture van converted into a mobile home, they switched to the Unimog U 1550 L with a special body. The two were traveling all over the world and filmed animals in their traditional habitat. In contrast to other animal series, viewers were able to experience the hardships and difficulties that the two filmmakers had while shooting in the wild. In addition, the animal scenes were not accompanied by music or lavishly added music. The authenticity of the partly unique film recordings and the humorous narrative made the series a great success; it was broadcast in 100 countries. Arendt and Schweiger received several renowned television awards for this work, such as the 1990 Adolf Grimme Bronze Award (for script and direction of The Nights of the Tasmanian Devil ), the Bavarian Television Award 1991 (for a landscape song ) and the Golden Camera 1989 , as well as the DUH Environment Media Prize 2006 in the Lifetime Achievement category and the NaturVision Film Festival Audience Award 2012.

In November 2016 it became known that Arendt and Schweiger had not received any new orders from Bayerischer Rundfunk after almost 40 years. As Hans Schweiger told dwdl.de , the age of the animal filmmakers, both born in 1949, is the reason. The BR denied it and justified it with the pressure to save. 450 of 1,000 full-time positions are to be cut by 2025 alone.
