Der Tierfreund is a German children's and youth magazine and is published by Johann Michael Sailer Verlag in Nuremberg, which belongs to the French Bayard group . Tierfreund is aimed at girls and boys between the ages of 8 and 13 who are interested in wild animals and pets, nature, science, environmental protection.

Tierfreund is only available by subscription , the magazine is not sold at the kiosk and appears monthly with a sold circulation of around 56,000 copies. It is considered to be "educationally valuable" and is recommended by the Ministries of Education and the Reading Foundation . Andrea Hösel has been the editor-in-chief since 1990.

The first edition appeared in July 1949 and then monthly. The 24-page magazine contained numerous black and white photographs. The multi-page essays by various authors described native and exotic animal and plant species in a narrative manner. Initially, the periodical was published by the Frankfurt-based Helios-Kunstverlag. Until the mid-1970s the magazine was still called “Der kleine Tierfreund” . In 1978, the animal lover was joined by the magazine Bimbo for younger children.

The magazine Tierfreund is now a classic among German schoolchildren's magazines and for a long time stood under the motto "Experience nature - understand - protect", today in short: Tierfreund - the young knowledge magazine.

Content

As a rule, today's animal lover is divided into the following main topics:

  • Animals and nature : reports show domestic and international natural areas, one animal is shown in a portrait.
  • Adventure Knowledge provides information on scientific topics, including experiments.
  • Actively and creatively informed about the hot spots on earth: from climate change to social problems around the world. Readers can get involved in campaigns, get suggestions for discussion and tips to follow suit.
  • Pets and entertainment : Provides information on questions of keeping pets. The offer is supplemented by animal comics, jokes, puzzles, knowledge tests and an XXL poster.
