The Mönchengladbach Zoo is located in the Mönchengladbach district of Odenkirchen am Pixbusch.
Data
A non-profit association was founded in 1957 as the sponsor . On an area of 4.3 hectares, the zoo houses around 400 mostly European animals. Due to its relatively low prices and the feeding options in the petting zoo , the zoo is particularly attractive for families with children. There are also annual tickets with unlimited access to the zoo.
The head of the company and managing director has been the biologist and former head of the Delitzsch zoo, Katrin Ernst , since February 15, 2014 . Before that, Norbert Oellers managed the zoo for 38 years.
Extract from the list of species
There are a total of around 90 animal species, including 50 species of water birds and 4 species of monkeys.
The zoo's current goal is to improve existing species instead of acquiring new ones. In this context, the criticized brown bear husbandry was abandoned and the previous brown bear enclosure for coatis and raccoons was redesigned. It is rare for a German zoo for coatis to swim here.
A species of marten is housed in the coati enclosure, and tortoises move into the raccoon enclosure.
Facilities
In addition to the petting zoo, there are two children's playgrounds and a cafeteria with a heated winter garden, as well as a souvenir shop. Guided tours for groups as part of the zoo school , a joint project between the zoo and the city of Mönchengladbach, are possible after registration. The park is open all year round from 9 a.m., in summer until 6 p.m., in winter until 1 hour before dark. Kindergartens and school classes from Mönchengladbach have free entry.
