The Tierpark Dessau is a 11 hectares large zoo in the city of Dessau . Laid out in 1958 in the park of a mausoleum from the 19th century, it is an important local recreation area for over 100,000 visitors every year.
location
The zoo is located in the Ziebigk district , immediately east of the Georgium and, together with Georgengarten and Beckerbruch, forms a large landscape park, but is not part of the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm World Heritage Site like them .
Livestock
Around 500 specimens from a total of 120 different species are housed in the zoo. Most of the animals come from the European area. The animal population ranges from wolves , goats and donkeys to kangaroos and llamas to jaguars and coatis .
The newest facility in the park is the dune landscape mudflat facility , which offers various avocets , lapwing etc. a home. In 2009, the facility was awarded the BdZ beaver for species-appropriate animal husbandry .
The reticulated python Otto , who had lived in the zoo since 1979 and was euthanized in 2018 , reached an extraordinary age of 40 . A tiger python has been kept since Otto's death .
