Freistadt has since 1879 a garrison , first in Castle Freistadt , where up to 1918 units of the Imperial Army later of, Austrian Armed Forces were stationed. In 1937, today's Tilly barracks was built by the corporate government under Federal Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg on Kasernenstrasse south of the old town.

After the annexation of Austria , the barracks were occupied by the German armed forces between 1938 and 1945 .

In the past, around 300 basic military servants of the new armed forces were trained in this barracks each year. Management training has been taking place here since 2006. The military shooting range in the Zelletau and the garrison training area (GÜPL) Geyer in St. Peter are the two military training areas belonging to the Freistadt barracks. At the end of 2015, the Tilly barracks should have been closed by Defense Minister Klug , among other things, for reasons of savings , but his successor Hans Peter Doskozil ordered the Tilly barracks to continue to exist in 2016, also due to the refugee crisis , so that it is now in operation as the location of the hunter battalion.
