life and work

Fürniss received his doctorate in 1974 from the University of Freiburg with the subject of calcium movements and their importance for controlling heart contraction: an analog computer model of the electro-mechanical coupling of the heart.

From 1978 to 79, Fürniss was an assistant doctor in paediatrics, a member of the Amsterdam medical examiner system and a member of the government's commission on trauma consequences of child abuse and neglect of the Netherlands.

From 1979 to 1982, Fürniss was an assistant doctor in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Hospital for Sick Children, London.

He was an assistant doctor at the Royal Free Hospital from 1982 to 1985, then from 1985 to 1987 senior physician at the Royal Free Hospital and University College Hospital London. From 1987 to 1990 he was Senior Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Tavistock Clinic, London.

From 1990 to 2013 was Fürniss University Professors of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Münster and director of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, -psychosomatik and psychotherapy Muenster of University Hospital Muenster .

Fürniss sees the causes of child abuse in the dysfunction of the victims' families.

Fürniss developed methods to ask children about possible violent experiences (anatomically correct dolls, fairy tales, surveys). Critics complained, among other things, of "interrogation-like" interviews with children and questions with implicit answers. Among other things, an employee of Wildwasser referred to the Worms processes and employees of Zartbitter in the Montessori process on the method of Fürniss. The years of trials ended with acquittals for all of the accused because abuse could not be proven or had demonstrably not taken place.

Fürniss later came under fire for his survey methods and principles.

He might still be considered a witness in the process and does not want to comment beforehand. Nor was he prepared to provide information about where he had acquired the scientific qualifications on which his suggestive questioning method was based. The university's press office also refused to provide information about the academic career of its professor. And the request to the Ministry of Science was also rejected unanswered with the note that Mr. Fürniss did not want to provide any information about it, that would be respected. "
