Timo Pesonen

Timo Pesonen (* 1965 ) is a Finnish EU official. As Director General, he has headed the newly established Directorate General Defense Industry and Space (DG DEFIS) of the European Commission since January 2020 . Previously, he headed the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs from March 2019 , and before that he headed the Directorate-General for Communication from July 2015 .

Life

Timo Pesonen graduated from the University of Tampere with a master's degree in social sciences and international politics in 1989. After military service, he moved to the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he held various positions. From 1997 to 2002 he acted as a special advisor on issues relating to the European Community for the Finnish Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen . From 2004 to 2009 and again from 2010 to 2014 he was head of cabinet of the Finnish EU Commissioner Olli Rehn . Before he took over the management of the Directorate-General for Communication, he served as its Deputy Director-General from 2014.
