Timoleon Filimon
Timoleon Filimon ( Greek Τιμολέων Φιλήμων , * 1833 , Nafplio ; † March 7, 1898 , Athens ) was a Greek journalist, politician and intellectual and a founding member of the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece (Ιστορική καδados ληados κληados καδados γληάδados κληδados κληδados - γιorκρς ikiθνοο γικρίς θνοίο γιorκίς ikiθνοο γιorκρς iki ι ia ή ).
Life
- Study and career start
Filimon was born in Nafplio in 1833 as the son of the publisher and writer Ioannis Filimon (Ιωάννης Φιλήμων). The father was a member of the Filiki Eteria . Timoleon studied law at the University of Athens , which he graduated with honors. From a young age, however, he was already engaged in journalism, initially in his father's magazine, Eon (Αιών), which he took over as director in 1856. The following year he was imprisoned for three months for insulting majesty against Otto . Later he was the secretary of the committee that brought the crown to George in Denmark . As a result, he became his teacher until 1867.
- Political career
That year he got into politics. Without having been elected, he became a Member of Parliament for Attica. In 1868 he received his seat in the first Greek parliamentary election (Ελληνικές βουλευτικές εκλογές 1868) and was appointed Vice President of Parliament. He failed in the 1869 elections and in 1874 the elections were canceled prematurely. In 1875 (Ελληνικές βουλευτικές εκλογές 1875) and 1879 (18λληνικές βουλευτικές εκλογές 1879) he was elected and only in the following elections he left the new parliament (ήωνωω ννλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλΕΕήήήήήή νλλ At the same time, he dealt with local issues: in 1874 he became alderman (δημοτικός σύμβουλος) in Athens, a post that he held four times in succession. From 1878 to 1887 he was chairman of the Athens City Council. He became mayor of Athens in 1887, but resigned in 1891 due to economic difficulties.
- Cultural creation
He was the first curator of the Parliament Library (Βιβλιοθήκη της Βουλής) from 1874 to 1888. During this time the collections were built up. In 1874 there were 5,000 volumes and at the end of his tenure the library contained around 120,000 volumes. He was a founding member of the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece and its first chairman from 1882 to 1887, he was also secretary of the Musical and Dramatic Society (Μουσικού και Δραματικού Συλλόγου) and took part in the preparation of the Games of the First Olympiad . According to information on the website of the Greek Masonic Lodge , Filimon was the Grand Master of the Lodge.
- Confrontation with Protestantism
Filimon was a key player in the Jonas King trials . He represented a national, orthodox image of Greece and at times wrote daily articles against King and Michail Kalopothakis .
- death
He died in Athens on March 7, 1898 after a heart attack. The then Prime Minister Alexandros Zaimis , cabinet members and politicians, as well as members of the royal family , attended his funeral, which was celebrated in public .

In addition to his articles in various magazines, he published the handbook The Mayor (Ο Δήμαρχος - o dimarchos) and after his death his translation of Fustel de Coulanges ' Το αρχαίον άστυ (To archeon asty, The ancient state) was published by Spyridon Lambros .
