Alexandros Zaimis

Alexandros Zaimis ( Greek Ἀλέξανδρος Ζαΐμης , born November 9, 1855 , † September 15, 1936 in Vienna ) was a Greek politician . The son of Thrasivoulos Zaimis , a former Greek Prime Minister, entered the political business at a young age, becoming a parliamentarian in 1885 and prime minister for the first time in 1897. In 1906 he became High Commissioner of the Cretan State up to the union with Greece.

In 1917 he was again Prime Minister of Greece under King George, while Eleftherios Venizelos established a counter-government in northern Greece. In June of the same year he gave up his post under pressure from the Entente in favor of Venizelos.

As a moderate conservative, he again took over the office of Prime Minister from 1926 to 1928 in a coalition government of the Venizelists with moderate conservatives. He served as President from 1929 until the reestablishment of the monarchy in 1935.

He died in Vienna in 1936 .
