Timothy Olufosoye

Timothy Omotayo Olufosoye (* between 1907 and 1912 in Nigeria , † October 30, 1992 there ) was a Nigerian educator and Anglican clergyman . He was the first primate of the Church of Nigeria .

Life

Olufosoye was the grandson of a tribal chief and his father was the first Christian in his region. His date of birth was not recorded, it is believed that he was born between 1907 and 1912. Olufosoye was trained as a catechist and teacher at St. Andrew's College in Oyo from 1940 to 1941 . 1945-1946 he studied in Melville Hall in Oyo Religious Studies, where he on 15 December 1946 deacon and on 21 December 1947 in the Christ Church Cathedral in Lagos for priest was ordained.

From 1952 to 1956 he worked as a priest in Lagos and Ondo , from 1955 to 1959 as a canon and from 1959 to 1965 as the first provost of Ondo Cathedral . On October 10, 1965 he was ordained the first African bishop of the Diocese of Gambia and The Rio Pongas . In 1971 he became Bishop of the Diocese of Ibadan , Nigeria. With the founding of the Church of Nigeria as an autonomous province within the Anglican Community , he was elected its first archbishop on February 24, 1979 , an office he held until his retirement in December 1986. During his tenure, the number of dioceses in his province rose from 16 to 27.

He was married and had several children.
