Timurbugha

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Timurbugha was Sultan of the Mamluks in Egypt from 1467 to 1468.

As-Sahr Timurbugha was of Albanian descent. In 1442 he became an emir and second secretary. During the reign of al-Mansur Uthman he became first secretary, and under the short-term Sultan az-Zahir Bilbay he was proclaimed Sultan "al-Dhahir Timurbugha Al Dhahiri" on December 5, 1467 at the urging of the powerful Mamlukenemirs. He was well educated in philology , law, and history and was interested in theological issues. He also tried to find a balance between the various factions of the Mamluks and released the Emirs Ahmad and Othman, who had been imprisoned under his predecessors, from prison in Alexandria. However, this led to resistance from the other emirs, who deposed Timurbugha in 1468 and banished them to Damiette . As a sultan, al-Ashraf Kait-Bay Al Dhahiri (1468-1496) prevailed in the following years .
