Tingo is the capital of Tingo District , Luya Province , Amazonas Region , Peru .

"Tingo" means the confluence of one river into another. Originally the village was built on the banks of the Utcubamba .

The original village of Tingo was almost completely destroyed by a mudslide in 1994. The decision was then made to completely rebuild the village on a hill above the old location. The original place therefore has very few inhabitants, but has regained importance as a central traffic junction in recent years. The streets of Leymebamba , Magdalena and Kuelap meet at Tingo . In addition, the main access road to the Pisuquía district begins here .

The newly developed district on the hill is now called "Nuevo Tingo". Both districts have a Catholic church and a cemetery. In the old part there is an important police station which is involved in the fight against coca transport in the region. Most of the institutions were also relocated to the heights after the disaster in 1994: In Nuevo Tingo, for example, there is a kindergarten, a primary school and a secondary school. Nuevo Tingo also has a health post.

The festival of the village saint in Tingo takes place from September 8th to 9th.

The 2005 census counted 219 houses, 157 of them in Nuevo Tingo and 62 in old Tingo. Tingo is by far the largest place in the district.

Tingo is the starting point for visiting some of the central attractions of the Amazon region. The most outstanding is Kuelap .
