Attractions

Leymebamba is the starting point for trips to the Condor Lake , where various quipus and over 200 mummies have been found. These and other finds from the Chachapoya culture have been on display in a new museum in Leymebamba since 2000.

Around Leymebamba there are ruins of the Chachapoya culture and a hitherto hardly explored cave system.

The village festival takes place every year around August 28th, the feast of St. Augustine. A second important festival for the place is the festival of the " Virgen del Carmen " on July 16.

Infrastructure

A public bus travels north and west once a day. The entrances are well-paved gravel roads. From Kuelap and Chachapoyas in the north, the slope runs flat along the Río Utcubamba. The western access from Cajamarca and Celendín leads over two high passes, between which the deeply cut valley of the Río Marañón is crossed.

There are several simple hotels and restaurants in the village; Fried trout is typical of the region.
