The Tinker Air Force Base is a US Air Force Base in Oklahoma City , south of Midwest City , Oklahoma . 24,000 employees work in 500 buildings on this basis. The area is 17.31 km².
history
In 1940 the War Department began opening up the central regions of the USA for supply bases. Oklahoma City offered 1.94 km² of land plus the option of a further 3.89 km². So on April 8, 1941, the order was issued to set up a depot there. Tinker Field opened in 1942 and was named after General Clarence L. Tinker , who died in World War II.
Based produced Douglas Aircraft Company about 50% of the employed in World War Douglas AC-47 Spooky and several Douglas A-20 . The production facility was closed in 1945.
On March 25, 1948, a tornado was successfully predicted for the first time from Tinker , about three hours later the storm swept over the southeast corner of the base.
Today there are Boeing E-3 AWACS of the Air Combat Command stationed on Tinker , as well as Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers of the Air Force Reserve Command .
