Midwest City is a city in Oklahoma County , Oklahoma . According to estimates by the US Census Bureau , the city had almost 60,000 inhabitants in 2016, making it the eighth largest city in the state.
The city's largest employer is the United States Air Force , which operates Tinker Air Force Base south of the city . A General Motors plant closed in early 2006. With the Midwest City Hall Arboretum there is also a botanical garden in the city.
history
Midwest City was founded in 1942 by WP "Bill" Atkinson, who built housing for the military base. The place name is related to the Tinker Air Force Base, which was previously called the Midwest Air Depot. The city was built right next to this military airfield, outside the military zone. In 1951 the city received the America's Model City award.
