Arcadia is a small town in Oklahoma County in the center of the US -amerikanischen state of Oklahoma . In 2000 Arcadia had 279 inhabitants. Arcadia is located around 30 km northeast of Oklahoma's capital Oklahoma City and belongs to the metropolitan area around this city.

founding

Arcadia was founded in 1889 under the so-called Homestead Act , which sparked a run on unregistered land. The fertile farmland around the Deep Fork River mainly attracted African American and white cotton farmers. They named their city Arcadia after the Greek landscape because of its peaceful and quiet location .

Economic development

A post office was founded as early as 1890. After the 1902-1903 Railway from Bartlesville to Oklahoma City was built that passed directly to Arcadia, the city received connection to the railway network and continued to prosper. It became an important regional trading center. In 1904 800 inhabitants were counted, in 1907 the number of inhabitants was 994.

In 1910 there were 3 churches and two racially separated schools in Arcadia. In the 1920s, Arcadia received a telephone connection, housed two banks, seven supermarkets and two modern cotton harvesters.

After the construction of US Highway 66 from Wellston via Luther past Arcadia to Edmond, the "Mother Road" brought further income for Arcadia's economic life.

"The Round Barn", the Arcadia round barn

Right on Route 66 in Arcadia, one of the few historic round barns has been preserved. The round shape offered less surface to attack the tornadoes that occurred in the region . The Round Barn in Arcadia was built in 1898. Over the years, the now unused barn fell into disrepair until the large roof dome collapsed in 1988. After a restoration in 1992, it is now used as an event room. In the course of the rediscovery of the old historical Route 66 , it became known beyond the borders of the region through tourism. The Round Barn is included in the United States ' list of Historic Monuments .
