Tinta Carvalha

The red grape variety Tinta Carvalha is an autochthonous grape variety from Portugal. It is recommended in the regions of Trás-os-Montes , Beira Interior Norte , Beira Interior Sul , Alentejo , Ribatejo and Oeste . Before the phylloxera disaster, the variety was also widespread in the Douro region. In Portugal's grape variety index, the variety ranks 8th among the red varieties with a planted area of ​​5,242 hectares .

The variety sprouts very early and produces low-alcohol wines that are mostly lacking in body and expression. The variety is very productive. Tinta Carvalha is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
