The Tiran is an Israeli modification of the Soviet medium tanks T-54 and T-55 and - in isolated cases - T-62 .

history

During the Six Day War , the Israeli forces captured several hundred T-54 and T-55 tanks , mainly from Egypt . These, like some T-62s captured in the Yom Kippur War , were modernized by Israel and taken over into their own service under the name Tiran .

  • Ti-67 - Collective term for the T-54 and T-55 modified by Israel (67 stands for the year of the Six Day War, 1967).
  • Tiran-1 - unmodified T-54.
  • Tiran-2 - unmodified T-55.
  • Tiran-4 - modified T-54 with the original 100 mm cannon . Two water canisters were attached to the rear of the tower, new chain covers and a new loader hatch (which now opens to the rear) were installed. The armament was improved with a Browning MG .30 cal M1919A4 in front of the loader hatch.
  • Tiran-4Sh - Modified T-54 equipped with the Sharir 105mm cannon . In addition, a new IR searchlight for the commander, a new homing device (from the M4 Sherman tank) and fire extinguishers were installed. The Browning MG .30 cal M1919A4 was now mounted in the middle of the tower roof. The ammunition storage has also been modified to accommodate the new 105 mm shells. New communication facilities, modified driver and commander seats and a new loader hatch, which can now also be opened from the outside, have been installed. The Soviet coaxial machine gun was replaced by a 7.62 mm Browning machine gun and the DShK-1938/46 -Fla machine gun was replaced by a 12.7 mm Browning machine gun . Fire control system, night vision devices, power supply, air conditioning, antenna attachments at the rear of the tower have been changed.
  • Tiran-5 - Modified T-55 with the original 100mm cannon. Two water canisters were attached to the rear of the tower, new chain covers, storage boxes on the tower and a new loader hatch were installed. The armament was improved with a .30 cal M1919A4 Browning machine gun in front of the loader hatch. Later a .50 cal M2 MG was placed over the barrel, first aid kit, a ring around the loader hatch for the Browning MG, new headlights (from the M60 Patton ), a folded stretcher on the left and a Field telephone for the infantry at the rear of the vehicle have been retrofitted.
  • Tiran-5Sh - Modified T-55 armed with the Royal Ordnance L7 105 mm cannon. In addition, a new IR searchlight for the commander, a new homing device (from the M4 Sherman tank) and fire extinguishers were installed. The Browning MG .30 cal M1919A4 was now mounted in the middle of the tower roof. The ammunition storage has also been modified to accommodate the new 105 mm shells. New communication facilities, modified driver and commander seats and a new loader hatch, which can now also be opened from the outside, have been installed.   • Tiran-6 - T-62 tanks, modernized to Israeli claims, captured in the Yom Kippur War. But since their number was small, they were not introduced to the troops.
  • Ti-67S - This is how the Ti-67 are called with further improvements to the aforementioned. This includes the installation of a 609 hp Detroit 8V-71T diesel engine , new semi-automatic hydromechanical clutches with torque converter , new air filters, reactive armor on the turret and hull, Cadillac Gage Textron weapon stabilization system, the installation of the computer-aided fire control system EL-OP Matador, IR detectors, new night vision devices for commanders, loaders and drivers, Spectronix fire extinguishing and suppression system, new tower storage compartments, several external storage options and a modern driver's seat (removal of the steering lever and installation of a steering wheel).

In the early 1980s, the Tiran tanks were decommissioned. Some were sold, others converted into Achzarit armored transport vehicles.
