Tita do Rêgo Silva

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tita do Rêgo Silva (* 1959 in Caxias , Maranhão , Brazil ) is a visual artist who lives in Hamburg and works primarily with the woodcut technique . She also makes installations.

Life

After studying tourism from 1977 to 1980 at the private higher education institution União Pioneira da Integração Social (UPIS) in Brasília , she studied art at the University of Brasília from 1985 to 1988 . Since 1988 she has been working as a freelance artist in Hamburg.

Her small and large woodcuts often show slender, long-legged human beings , mostly communicating with one another, often dancing. Viewers are often reminded of rock carvings, cave drawings with their depictions of deer and goat demons, dancing shamans and the devils and gods of the syncretic Brazilian cults. Most of the beings are happy, playful and dancing. Often animals also play in the scene. She usually designs her woodcuts in color.

The artist consciously developed her current style as a return to her Brazilian roots. She describes her home region in Brazil as a very Catholic area in which religious stories and myths are not only very much alive, but are also perceived as reality by the people. For many people these stories are true and the beings are part of reality. This fantastic reality and its colorfulness as well as the real colors and liveliness of the area and the people are the inspiration of their creations. The mixed human beings and the devils are pure fantasy products of the artist and are not assigned to any particular characters in the popular stories and mythologies of their homeland. The artist does not give her works a title because she does not want to shape the reactions of people, their communication with the picture.

The artist has her studio in Koppel 66, House for Art and Crafts, a former machine factory in St. Georg an der Koppel, which has housed twelve workshops and studios, a vegetarian café and the GEDOK art forum since 1981.

The book Childhood by the author Peggy Parnass , which she designed , was named one of the “25 most beautiful books of the year” by the Book Art Foundation in 2013 .

Exhibitions

Since 1989 the book artist has exhibited in numerous German and foreign private galleries, as well as in municipal art institutions. Since 1999 she has been represented at all editions of the North German hand press fair "BuchDruckKunst" in the Hamburg Museum of Work , u. a. also in group exhibitions such as the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz .
