Fortunato Tito Arecchi , called Tito Arecchi, (born December 11, 1933 in Reggio Calabria ) is an Italian physicist who deals with laser physics and quantum optics .

Arecchi received his doctorate in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic in Milan in 1957. He then did research on electronics for nuclear technology and nuclear physics at CISE in Milan. From 1960 to 1962, immediately after the invention of the laser, he conducted research on lasers at Stanford University and was then research group leader for lasers at CISE until 1970. From 1963 he was assistant professor at the University of Milan, from 1970 professor of physics at the University of Pavia and from 1975 until his retirement in 2008 professor of physics at the University of Florence .

In 1969/70 he was visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , 1968/69 visiting scientist at the IBM research laboratory in Rüschlikon near Zurich and 1978 and 1985 at the IBM research laboratory in San José .

From 1975 to 2000 he was President of the Italian National Optics Institute (Istituto Nazionale di Ottica, INO).

In 1995 he received the Max Born Award . He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and a member of the Academia Europaea .

From 1976 to 1998 he was vice-editor of Nuovo Cimento and from 1999 to 2003 editor of the European Physical Journal D. He is editor of Chaos magazine and co-editor of Optics Communications.
